Monday, August 27, 2001Bug Journal, Day 27 All nineteen chrysalises from the first cage have hatched. That's an incredible number in and of itself considering I don't think we raised more than 12 per year before. But that's just the first cage. We now have another cage of 39 chrysalises, and still another cage of twenty caterpillars. Yesterday when I released the last monarch out of the first cage, I put it on a butterfly bush in back. I turned and went back to the house and felt something weird on the side of my head in my hair, like a bug or leaf or something. I touched it, and it was my butterfly! I guess it imprinted on me.
Really weird surreal (conceptual) dream last night because it's not about things I either usually think or dream about. I mean, usually don't *think* about my parent's house, but I dream about it a lot. And I think about other things a lot even if I don't dream about them (Hullo...Brian Eno circa 1973?). One musician I never really got into although highly respected by certain musical friends is Frank Zappa. Although I respected him more as a spokesperson and mind, his music seemed somewhat inaccessible to me personally. Maybe it's a gender thing...men seemed to get into Zappa more, although Stan was never really into him either. Who knows. Anyway, the ghost of Zappa, at least one of his famous quotes, seemed alive in my dream in a very weird way. Dream: I was talking to some teenage guy (some white suburban bloke). I have absolutely no clue who he was, however I had known him when he was younger (like around 12 or so) and now he was in his late teens and affecting a sort of urban hip-hop attitude and accent. I was trying to explain to him that his accent is stupid because it's made-up and there's no reason he would have an accent because his family doesn't have an accent. I was trying to explain to him a sincere love of something as opposed to immitating it. Then for some odd reason the famous Zappa quote, "**** 'em if they can't take a joke," came up, but in my dream the quote was "**** 'em if they won't let us make money." OK, this is where it's bizarre...I somehow understood that that quote was the *real original* Zappa quote, and he said it when he was looking for a manager and he was interviewing a string of them and a bunch of them were wanting to make money only for themselves and leave nothing for the band. Heh. Anyway, I was using this quote to illustrate something to the teenage guy, but I don't really understand what my example was, or what it was I was exactly trying to say to him, but it was as if I was trying to help him find his life's path. Very very weird.
Sunday, August 26, 2001I find this extremely disturbing. People who think of butterflies as flowers or confetti. How do they ship them so that they arrive alive? The kind of disney witches that would ooh and aah at butterflies at their wedding are the kind of people that would probably squash their young. (Squash the butterfly's young...caterpillars...not their own...heh...but leave it to a disney witch to squash their own young too.)
